View Full Version : How to play this hand?
kibby 01-18-2006, 08:22 AM Im asking about how to play this hand:
You get dealt A-K (Suited or Non-suited)or pocket A's or pocket K's.
You call the bet.
The flop comes out and theres a pair (of any 2 cards)plus one more (useless to you) card.
How should you play this from there?
How would you play it?
chloe 01-18-2006, 08:24 AM Im confused with your question.I cannot advise you on this one unless you will tell me what position are you in, what was the preflop scenario?
kibby 01-18-2006, 08:26 AM lets say in a position really, say 8-10 players at the table, u got the A-K, actually I meant to say Pocket A-A or pocket K's, bets are regular low stakes 10/20.
chloe 01-18-2006, 08:28 AM what???
AK OR AA OR KK - that matters you know
the position matters too.
Sorry I cannot understand what your trying to explain.

Im new to this game so maybe im not gettin what your explination is by position...
all im asking is how would you play a hand where you get dealt
A-K
OR YOU GET DEALT A-A
OR YOU GET DEALT K-K
ANY OF THOSE HAND YOU GET DEALT
AND ON THE FLOP A PAIR OF ANY OTHER CARDS COMES OUT...ITS NOT THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND YOU KNOW? IF YOU CANT ANSWER THEN DONT WORRY LET SOMEONE ELSE ANSWER...IM NOT TALKING ABOUT PLAYING IN TH WORLD SERIES OF POKER OR ANYTHING JUST A FRIENDLY GAME.;)
brylle 01-18-2006, 08:33 AM Heres what i would do. Raise preflop instead of calling because then it pushes out junk hands. If you have AA and the flop comes j 5 5 (or any low card) id say stay in a raise. On the other hand if you have AA and it comes K K Q (or pairs any high card)and the other play bets into you its safe to assume he has trip kings and you should lay it down. Hope this helps
chloe 01-18-2006, 08:35 AM Hey brylle, thanks for the info. I know I might have explained it a little weird but you understood exactly what i was asking, thanks again i'll try out that play.

Everyone understood you, but there is a monumental difference between AA/KK and AK. Implying you would play either the same way loses clarity a little.
By position, he means on the button, late position(one of the last to act preflop, right of dealer,)one of the blinds, etc.
chloe 01-18-2006, 08:39 AM Ok I got it now, see thats one thing he said i didnt understand...i guess say if i was BB, with AA or KK.Thanks norshvind for explaining this to me.
ishii 01-18-2006, 08:41 AM .02 cents worth:
In low limit, limit (also known as no foldem holdem): Generally
AA, KK, QQ, JJ
Any position - raise, reraise etc preflop. Get money in the pot. You DON'T want alot of players in when you're playing big pocket pairs.
On the flop
Depends on your position, what the board is representing and how many players are in. Seriously, EVERY situation is different
Large Pocket pairs get beat all of the time.
Save yourself some money by not becoming married to them. Learning when to lay them down is one of the biggest improvements one can make to their game.
norshvind 01-18-2006, 08:43 AM Chloe, people understood what you were asking, but there is more information needed to determine how to play your hand.
First off - AA and KK and AK are all great hands, but are very different in how you treat them. A flop of J, 5, 5 for AK is MUCH different than that same flop for AA. So - try to figure out which one you want discussed.
Second - What position are you in? Position is very crucial in Hold 'Em especially pre-flop, and helps dictate what action you should take. Generally, AA, KK and AK can all be played similarly before the flop in any position, but knowing what position you were in when you go it, and what happened before you is important too. If you only limped in on the BB with AA because you wanted to get lots of action, J/5/5 flop could spell great disaster for someone who limped with 1 of the other 2 5's.
A general rule of thumb - it takes better hands to raise from early position than later position. I'm not saying thats always true, but its something you need to consider. If you are in early position with AA/KK and you raise, it should get notice from other players that you have high cards. Similarly, if you are in late position, and the guy in 1st position has bet high preflop, a flop of low cards, shouldn't worry your AA/KK too much.
Anyways - about your question - It really depends how the board comes. You need to be raising your AA/KK/AK preflop so people with J/10, 8/5 etc have to fold, so when the flop comes J/5/5 you should still have the best hand. Still, if you have AA, raised 4xBB, got a caller and the flop came J/5/5 i'd say a pot sized bet is safe, and if he re-raises you, to really think what kind of hand he has. Assuming he's not a card chaser, the only hands he could have called you with pre-flop would be AJ,KJ,QJ and maybe A5. If he has of those TPTK's you are in fantastic position.
If the board pairs with High cards (Say, Q/Q/10) and he's reraising you all in, it might be safe to fold your AA/KK, because if he called pre-flop you can give him credit for having AQ,QK,QJ,TT.
It's a rough position, throwing away AA/KK is very tough - but I guess the goal is making them pay early and putting them to the test of the flop. Remember, he if has KQ and the flop is J/5/5, he's even more bothered by the flop than you are.
